Pssst! The Edco Primary Publications launches for 2018 will be taking place in March and April in Kilkenny, Dublin North and South, Limerick, Cork, Galway, Athlone and Wexford. As well as launching Number Facts 1-4 and Bua na Cainte 3, they will also be showcasing Operation Maths and Exploring Spelling. Click on the link above for more info and to register.

Operation Maths Jr Infs to 2nd classes:

  • Junior Infants will be exploring the components of the numbers from 1 to 5, including combining and partitioning activities, as part of their continued work on the strand unit Analysis of Number. They will also be comparing and ordering sets of 1 to 5 objects.  If you haven’t used them yet, this would be an ideal time to try out some of the assorted Number Talks available to access by clicking on the link; scroll down to “Number Talks Resources for Infants”, then select Junior Infants, and then try out the resources in the folders, the “mixed” number sets would be of most relevance.
  • Senior Infants will spend most of February exploring exploring the number 9 as part of their continued work on the strand unit Analysis of Number, which will include combining and partitioning sets to 9. They will also explore the numbers to 9, via the strand unit of Representing & Interpreting Data. Similar to junior infants, the  Number Talks resources available at the link above are very applicable as well as the practical activities and stations using concrete materials, that are suggested in the TRB.
  • First Classes will extend their understanding of place value to numbers within 99, as well as exploring repeated addition as part of Algebra. They will also Represent and Interpret Data via simple surveys and graphs. The later part of the month will focus on 100 square activities, where the children will become more familiar with the numbers to 100 and begin to identify patterns on the 100 square including patterns in addition facts e.g. adding 10, 20, 30 etc to a given number. The Operation Maths 100 square eManipulative will be invaluable for these activities.
  • Second Classes will be exploring weight, time (to quarter hours on an analogue clock and to half hours on a digital clock) and how to estimate to total of addition calculations within 99. The development of keen estimation skills is very important throughout Operation Maths and work here will lay future foundations. Check out this post on estimation for more information.
